when you are down there you walk 1 step (any direction) and you see these shiny things appear on your top screen. you walk to those shiny things until your on top of them. then, use your stylus and tap the bottom screen. Shiny things will appear. you walk until your one step away from the shiny things and you hit A. you will find a sphere or a trap. If there are no shiny things on your top screen, check to see if you have spheres bury them for a little while and they will grow. hope this was helpful!
There is no specified place to find fossils, it is simply luck. However, in Platinum, you can only find Cranidos or Shieldon, not both. So if you have found a Cranidos fossil in Platinum, then you have to trade for a Shieldon.
