You can battle with it without letting it faint, use items on it (Items like Iron, Carbos and Calcium are the best), Walking with it (takes a lot), giving it a groom at the underground in Goldenrod city (There is one good and one great groomer that switches on being there and they only do it once a day). Also I recommend giving it the Soothe Bell witch increases how much happiness it gains (Its in the national park somewhere). And you can of course use the Pokewalker.
