A first edition card is when you look in between the picture and the effect, and on the right, you will see a 1st edition piece of writing on it.

A rare card is a silver title card, a super rare is the gold titles, the ultras, picture is shiny and secret is both picture and title are shiny, with a sparkle effect

AnswerThe cards up to Magician's Force have their rarity shown like this.

Normal Cards have a Black non shiny name, non-holographic picture, and a silver, shiny square in the bottom right corner of the card.

First Edition Cards have "1st Edition" printed under the bottom left corner of the picture of the monster and the shiny square in the bottom right corner of the card is gold.

Rare Cards have a Silver Reflecting name.

Super Rare Cards have a holographic picture, but a normal black, non-shiny name.

Ultra Rare Cards have a holographic picture and a gold name.

Secret Rare Cards have a Silver name and holographic background, both having a bit of a rainbow sparkle effect.

There are cards that come in Pre-made Starter decks with some of these effects on them. These cards are not as rare as those that come out of packets with the same effects because they are always in the specific deck you got.

In terms of rarity, a card's rarity can be determined if card name, artwork, borders, etc. are embossed and/or made holigraphic.

In terms of how strong it is in a duel, it depends on what kinds of strategies allow the card be used to its fullest potential or how it might benefit other cards. You can also look at the cost vs. effect ratio. Typically, the lower the cost and the better the effect, the better the card.
