Balin mentions that he could understand the speech of Ravens. The Thrush flies off and returns with a Raven named Roac. He is such an intelligent old bird he speaks in the Common tongue and we never find out if the dwarves can understand Raven speech.
He was waking Smaug from his long sleep. He was "knocking" on the door which was the entrance...
This would be the thrush. There were also ancient ravens around the mountain. Some of them could communicate with the dwarves.
The Thrush tells Bard about the missing spot of armor on the dragon's belly. And the thrush got the information listening to Bilbo tell the dwarves about it.
The cast of Thrush - 2010 includes: Rebecca Pearson as Ruby
15-The thrush that Bilbo saw outside the secret door to the Lonely Mountain is spotted by roac son of Carc. He tells Bilbo and the dwarves that Smaug is dead and that they should not trust the Master of Lake-town, but Bard. Thorin, assuming his ancestral role as King under the Mountain, sends the thrush for Dain in the Iron Hills. Thorin wants to go back to the Mountain. The dwarves work to fortify the mountain against the Elvenking; as they work, the ravens bring them news. The elves pitch camp and make merry; the dwarves then make merry, as well. Bard approaches to parley with Thorin. He refuses as long as Bard's men ally with elves. Bard's men leave and then his banner-bearers return with a demand for part of the hoard if they come to the aid of the dwarves. Thorin refuses and tells them to consider themselves under siege
A thrush.
The thrush overheard the conversation that Bilbo had with the dragon about the spot.
He was waking Smaug from his long sleep. He was "knocking" on the door which was the entrance...
An old raven, son of Carc, chief of all ravens.
The Old Thrush, one of the species of Great Thrush that lived in the Esgaroth region, told Bard that Smaug had a hole in his armored chest right over his heart.
This would be the thrush. There were also ancient ravens around the mountain. Some of them could communicate with the dwarves.
Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole
It is the thrush mentioned in moon-runes on Thorin's map. ' "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks," read Elrond, "and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's day will shine upon the key-hole." ' -page 50 of The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkein. (I don't own anything!) It is knocking on the door of Erebor with a snail, which shows the dwarves and Bilbo how to get in. (on page 189)
The information was that of a weak spot in Smaug's armour, a gap in his coat of scales, through which the arrow that killed him was fired.
There were many things written on the map, but one of the most important things was, "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light will shine on Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole."
Because this thrush is old and it can understand the common tongue, and the men of Lake-town and Dale can understand the language of the thrushes.
A warg as refered to in The Hobbit is a particularly evil type of wolf. Wargs and goblins often help each other with wicked deeds.Wargs, especially those of the Hobbit, were known to speak in their own language, and so they were sentient beasts, like the crow Roac and the Thrush. There is not too much description about the Wargs in Tolkien's works besides the fact that they were like wolves (often called by that name as well). However, it is interesting to note that a spell Gandalf one time uses in LOTR, when translated, calls the attacking Wargs "ngaurhoth" (werewolves). Thus, it is possible that the Wargs of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were the werewolves referred to in Tolkien's Silmarillion.
