How do you work shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog?

When you do a homing attack, repetitively press jump to melee attack the enemy. Hold it to jump off the enemy so you can home-attack another one.

Press the attack button in the air to fire stun energy. It will stun the enemies it hits.

Press attack button on the ground to kick.

Hold Y/Triangle when near a vehicle to operate it. If it does not work, try again. There is oftentimes a delay, especially with the tank.

You collect them all either in special stages or through progress of gameplay and you automatically become Super Sonic in the final boss fight. in the pre-dreamcast era you get the emeralds in the special stages, collect 50 rings in a normal level, then jump. In Sonic R you collect the emeralds hidden on the first four tracks (You must finish first to keep them) when you get them all, press down on the Sonic icon in character select to become Super Sonic. And in Sonic the Fighters/Sonic Championship you face Metal Sonic and do a button combo which I've never been able to pull off.

The instruction manual that comes with Sonic the Hedgehog is correct about pressing R1 but it is missing a step. To actually use Chaos Blast as Shadow you need to press R1 while in midair.
