The Careers needed him to re-activate the mines around their food supply. As Foxface demonstrated, there was a way to avoid them if you were smart enough to figure it out. The D3 Male, being from the district of Technology, was the perfect person for the job. After Katniss blew up their food supply, there was no need for him anymore so Cato snapped his neck.

When they find her in the tree, Peeta is not there, so Cato tries to climb the tree to get to her, but breaks a branch in the attempt. Then, Peeta gets there and suggests that they wait until she comes down because, "she can't stay up there forever." That gives her more time, and thankfully, Haymitch sends her some burn cream from her encounter with the fireballs. Mainly, Peeta joined the Careers to make sure of Katniss' safety.
