In the book Tarzan of the Apes, he didn't. He went naked until he killed the cannibal whom had killed Kala. Then Tarzan stole the cannibal's loincloth and put it on himself. ;)
It is not a skirt. It is called a loincloth.
Going by the book: Tarzan grabs some trinkets and stuff from the local cannibal tribe, and wears his father's locket (it has pictures of Tarzan's parents inside). As for Jane... I'm not sure. She might have some jewelery on her, and later in the story Tarzan gives her his locket. It's very sweet. :)
Phil Collins did NOT make Tarzan, only wrote songs for the Disney movie. Edgar Rice Burroughs made Tarzan, and like many authors, he probably liked his idea and decided to make it into a novel.
So far, there is Tarzan, Tarzan and Jane, and finally, Tarzan II (Tarzan two).
There are twenty-five books by Edgar Rice Burroughs featuring Tarzan : Tarzan of the Apes (1912) The Return of Tarzan (1913) The Beasts of Tarzan (1914) The Son of Tarzan (1914) Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar (1916) Jungle Tales of Tarzan, 1917 [1916]. You take a cloth and wrap it around your loins and tie it
The plural form for the noun loincloth is loincloths.
That is the correct spelling of "loincloth" (simple clothing item for the genital region).
A loincloth is also know as a drape.

In the 1967 animated version of Disney's "The Jungle Book", Mowgli's loincloth is a bright orange color. In re-releases, the loincloth color is red. In the 1994 live action version of Disney's "The Jungle Book", Mowgli's loincloth is white.
