Usually, a mirage occurs when the human brain is deprived from a source.

Say if you were stranded in a desert. You would have no water and be very parched. The brain is also going to be starved from the water, then conjures up an image of some water source (e.x. An oasis). This would lead you to believe that the thing the brain has just showed is real, therefore creating a mirage.
