In "Private Peaceful," Charlie stands up for Big Joe by defending him against the bullying and ridicule he faces due to his disabilities. He fiercely protects his brother from the harsh judgments of others, particularly when they are in the presence of their father. Charlie's loyalty and love for Big Joe highlight the strong bond between them, as he often puts himself at risk to ensure Big Joe feels safe and valued. This protective nature underscores the themes of brotherhood and compassion in the story.

Big Joe had meningitis while only 3 weeks old, he suffered irreversible damage and is now brain damaged and has learning difficulties. due to this he is unable to attend school like Charlie and Tommo. Although brain damaged big Joe is loved no less in the Peaceful household and is very much the centre of the family.
