He provides them with a place to stay that is safe and warm. Elrond helps them with supplies and sets them on their way. He also was the one to discover the moonrunes on Thorin's map, as well as identifying the elven blades they found in the troll's cave.

I don't think it's ever explicitly stated but I can think of three reasons:

1. They are traveling with Gandalf. Elrond is aware that Gandalf is constantly striving to defeat the evil of Sauron and is therefore willing to support him in any endeavor.

2. Elrond may be aware of Gandalf's true purpose in supporting Thorin's quest: to restore the dwarven kingdom under the mountain. In the "Quest for Erebor" (in Tolkien's "Unfinished Tales") the events of The Hobbit are set in a larger geopolitical context wherein Gandalf is concerned that there is no friendly power to the north of Mordor but rather a hostile dragon. He hopes that if Thorin succeeds in reclaiming his throne, a restored dwarven kingdom (and possibly a restored human kingdom in Dale) will serve to threaten Mordor's northern flank. Which is exactly what occurs in The Lord of the Rings. It is not shown but it is reported during the LOTR's that a Mordor army is indeed sent north to the Mountain and Dale and that it was ultimately defeated. It is then said that had the men of Dale and the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain not defeated this this northern Mordor army, it could have swung west and laid waste to much of the north of Middle Earth - possibly even reaching Rivendell. Thus, Gandalf was trying to establish a power north of Mordor and Elrond might have been in support of this mission.

3. Giving gifts is what great lords do. Tolkien was inspired by the history and legends of the middle ages (of Anglo-Saxon England in particular). In legends of the middle ages (and to some degree in real medieval history) lords are constantly giving out gifts to everyone who visits them, but particularly to heroes. This is because the way a great lord showed his wealth and his power was through the generosity of his gifts. Giving gifts was pretty much obligatory for lords - it was the kind of behavior that was expected of lords and the more they did it, the more they looked like true lords in the eyes of their followers. This wasn't purely generosity of course - these "gifts" were often nothing more than payments, even salaries. Thus, a lord with a reputation for giving great gifts is also a lord who has a reputation for paying people well and such a lord is likely to have many people coming to visit his court and possibly join his service. Thus, Elrond might have given the travelers aid because that was what the social values of his time expected of a great lord... and because it was in his cynical political interest to be known to be able to give gifts.
