Although Katniss loves her mother, she feels deeply betrayed by her and cannot trust her because she abandoned them after her father died and left eleven year old Katniss to fend for herself and feed her little sister Prim, who was seven.
Katniss is extremely angry with her in the first book and is very distant. In the second, however, Katniss warms up to her mother because she realizes that her mother is sorry for her years that she was distant because of Katniss's father's death. In the third book, Katniss isn't angry with her mother, but she is distant.
Mrs. Everdeen, the mother of Katniss, had a good mental state until the death of her husband. She suffered from deep depression after his death, and hardly left her bed. She usually just stared sadly at nothing, as if in a trance. Katniss throughout the book explains how badly her mother hurt her by abandoning her and Prim at a crucial moment in their lives.
Katniss and her mother have a very bad relationship. Every since her father died Katniss has had to look after her and her family, as her mum got 'sick' after her husbands death. She would sit in the house all day or lie in bed and wouldn't get food for Katniss or her sister, Prim, or look after them at all. After that Katniss found it hard to trust her mother, just in case she got 'sick' again.
She does love her mum, but she resents her a little. When her father died in the mine explosion, her mum went into shock and would hardly do anything, basically leaving Katniss to fend for herself and act as a mother figure to her sister, Prim.
