If you are still a student, there may be school plays in which you could appear. If not, go to auditions and apply, get an agent, look for work, and act when you can. It can be a tough line of work, since there is never any guarantee that a casting director will want to hire you. Some people start as background actors (or "extras") since the work is easier to get, although not as substantial as a speaking role.

What is the difference between a proscenium stage and a thrust stage?

A proscenium stage is where the actor faces the whole audience on the front (downstage) of the stage. A thrust stage is where the actor is surrounded on 3 sides by the audience. Think of a proscenium stage as the people coming to the front to see the actor whereas the thrust stage is where the stage comes out into the audience.
