The Bayer process is the primary method for refining bauxite to produce aluminum oxide, or alumina. It involves crushing the bauxite ore and mixing it with a hot, concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide, which dissolves the aluminum oxide present in the bauxite. The resulting solution is then cooled and allowed to settle, separating impurities as red mud. Finally, the aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from the solution, washed, and heated to produce alumina, which can be further processed to produce aluminum metal.
