There are a couple of ways nature has to deal with overpopulation:
Predators: when a group gets too big predators are able to capture individuals easier for consumption (their senses aren't built for dealing with larger than normal groups, what works as defense for a small group doesn't always work with a big group.)
Disease: with too many dead bodies around disease starts to kill off weaker members of the population.
Starvation: there's not enough food so after a period of time the weaker individuals die off. Also, without enough food reproductive processes stop so the population growth stops - it's just painful for the population to get to that point.
