Alternatively, the name could have come from a servant of the Spencer family. Oliver Cromwell's grandfather changed his name to Cromwell as a gesture of loyalty to his patron Thomas Cromwell. American slaves also used to do this, whether voluntarily or not, I don't know.

However, Chaplin is supposed to have been mostly Romany-Jewish, and the name Spencer may have been chosen as an Anglicised version of a foreign name.
