Harry is important in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone because he is the main character in the story. He survived the killing curse when he was a baby and became a famous wizard, known for defeating Lord Voldemort.

Towards the end of the book, he once again defeats Voldemort and saves the wizarding world from him.

Harry Potter prevented Lord Voldemort from getting the philosopher's stone and using it to return to power. In doing so, he no doubt saved countless lives, including his own.

Once Voldemort returned he would have instantly restarted the war but Harry would have been too young to properly defend himself and it would have taken much longer to defeat him, giving Voldemort plenty of time to kill more people.

However, had Voldemort returned this way the Ministry of Magic would have believed he had actually returned so the response would have been slightly quicker.
