Well, first of all, they were both in love with nature, in general, and the American wilderness, in particular. They both died while trying to life out their lives in the American bush, hunting game and living off the land by means no more evolved than those of earlier, ancestral men.

They both rejected modern day society and did their best at furthering themselves from its influence on the spirit.

They both left their families and chose a life of solitude and wandering rather than the secure and comfortable way of the ordinary citizen.

Both read a lot and shared the view of previous nature loving personalities such as Jack London and David Thoreau.
