Disneyland first opened to the public on 21st July 1955- the Grand Opening Festival was a disaster, as it occurred in the middle of a terrible heatwave with temperatures reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, melting the tarmac walkways and trapping women's high-heeled shoes in the asphalt! Also, a plumber's strike meant that few of the fountains were operational. Disneyland in the mid-'50s was smaller than it is now- it has since expanded substantially over the decades, and now includes the neighbouring Epcot Centre.
