Nine years earlier, on February 25, 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented an honorary Oscar to Morricone "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music."

Morricone had been nominated for Oscars on five other occasions, for his scores from "Days of Heaven" (1979), "The Mission" (1986), "The Untouchables" (1987), "Bugsy" (1991) and "Malèna" (2000).

He might have been nominated for his score from "Once Upon a Time in America" (1984), but a paperwork fiasco made him ineligible.
