What is John Simpson Kirkpatrick remembered for?

Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick (1892-1915) was an Australian medic in World War 1. He carried wounded soldiers on the back of a donkey to safety. John walked through shrapnel fires and survived many times but he was unlucky to die while performing a rescue during a battle. Kirkpatrick was actually a deserter from an earlier stint in the British merchant marine, who volunteered as "John Simpson" to be a stretcher bearer in the war. He was an ANZAC medic in the Gallipoli Campaign of the first World War.

Did John Simpson Kirkpatrick win a medal in WW1?

Many have lobbied for John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the men who used a donkey to lead wounded men to safety at Gallipoli, to be awarded a medal. However, he has never received either of the medals for which he should have been eligible, that is, the Distinguished Conduct Medal or a VC. He was never formally recommended by the officer in question. He is at least commemorated in a large bronze sculpture at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, as well as in many other statues and exhibits around Australia. Simpson is also commemorated in his home town of South Shields, England, where there are museum exhibits about him. A new petition has been launched to have him awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross before the 100th anniversary of his death in 2015. See the related link below.
