I didn't think Robert Shaw was married. I thought he was still a young man. All the surviving letters were written home to his parents.

Actually, Robert Shaw married Annie Haggerty on May 2, 1863, just 11 weeks before he was killed at Fort Wagner. They did not have any children, and Annie never remarried.
He didn't have kids because he died @ the age of 27 in fort Wagner :P
He was 25. He was born in 1837 and died in July 1863, but his birthday was not until October--so 25.
