In 1951 Hawkshaw and his first wife Reva adopted a four year old daughter named Marlene.He was divorced from Reva in 1958 and remarried in 1961 to country singer Jean Shepard.In 1962 they had a son Don Robbin Hawkins named after Don Gibson and Marty Robbins.When Hawkshaw died Mar. 5, 1963, Jean was pregnant with their second son Harold Franklin Hawkins Jr. He was born a few weeks after Hawkshaw died in the plane crash along with Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Randy Hughes who was Patsy's manager and Copas' son in law.
