First of all. Interest of what you want to learn is important. A child would probably not be much interested in reading a book with no pictures. Start off with books with vivid colors and drawings that catch attention. By being interested in the pictures, the interest in the text beside pictures grows. Start by learning the colors and the letters used to write the names of the colors. When the entire alphabet is "known", not necessarily fully, then expand by reading comics like Donald Duck or similar for children. These contain easy reading for children as the written stories correspond well to the drawn pictures. It is an enormous help when adults/mother/father/older siblings... read to you and point the finger at each word as they read whilst you look at the pictures and text in front of finger. Always have books, magazines, comics available for the young inexperienced reader. Answer all his questions regarding these and do encourage him/her to read. Show him/her that information can be found in various books. This will increase curiosity in younger children and increase their efforts of learning to read themselves. I started to read before school-age. Not properly, but ok for Donald. There was no force involved and my father always read a bedtime story for me when I was little. This is how I learned to read. Many thanks to my fathers patience and my mothers collection of comics, Tarzan, Superman, Spiderman, Donald Duck, The Phantom, Batman and others.
