In 1649, during the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell led an army of approximately 12,000 soldiers to attack Drogheda, Ireland. This siege was part of a campaign to subdue Irish resistance against English rule. The assault resulted in significant casualties, with many of the town's defenders and civilians killed. Cromwell's brutal tactics at Drogheda were intended to serve as a warning to other towns resisting his authority.

Drogheda is a town in Eastern Ireland. It was actually besieged twice: once during the Irish Rebellion in 1641 by O'Neill and his insurgents, who failed to take the town, and again, more famously in 1649 by Oliver Cromwell in his Conquest of Ireland: He did take the town, and massacred most of its habitants: the entire military garrison, any Catholic clergy and many of the civilians.

While it's difficult to quantify the exact number of people Oliver Cromwell personally killed, his military campaigns during the English Civil War and subsequent actions in Ireland resulted in significant loss of life. Notably, the siege of Drogheda in 1649 led to the deaths of around 3,000 soldiers and civilians. Estimates suggest that Cromwell's military actions could be linked to tens of thousands of deaths, particularly during the conquest of Ireland, but attributing a specific number directly to him is complex and debated by historians.
