The BBC began life in 1922 with a full name of British Broadcasting Company. It was a commercial organization set up to broadcast radio programs. In 1929 it changed from a commercial company to a public organization. Although the initials remained the same, it became the British Broadcasting Corporation, set up under a royal charter. 1929 was also the year it began television broadcasting for the first time.
It has continued to this day as a public service broadcaster and has remained independent of the British government throughout its history.
