The chain hoist has either a lever to power the hoist or a loop of operating chain pulls through the block of the hoist which then powers the block that takes up the main lifting chain.
A chain hoist uses gears to multiply force.A chain hoist is operated by hand. An operator pulls the light loop chain on the side of the chain hoist. This turns a gear mechanism inside the chain hoist housing to turn the chain pulley. When this pulley turns, it raises the heavy chain which usually has a hook on the end. By pulling the light chain loop, the manual hoist is actually able to increase the force that is being applied by the heavy chain. This is caused by the gear ratios inside the manual chain hoist. The mechanical work done by the operator is the same as the work done by the heavy lifting chain.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
There are many manufacturers online that sell electric chain hoists. Some of these retailers are: Hoosier Crane Service Company, Street Crane, and Custom Electric Panel. These are good places to start when one is thinking of buying an electric chain hoist.
Hi, I would like to know the real/original name of the 'chain hoist/pulley' I was taught 50 years ago when of doing O levels physics. I guess it was the inventor's name. Obviously we can still buy them but they only call them a chain hoist or pulley. thks john 23.11.10
Either the load would not lift cleanly, it might tilt or swing; or the hoist attachment mechanism (e.g. sling or chain) may fail. It will depend on the load, the hoist and the particular error in attachment.

Usually you would receive specific training for the chain hoist trolley provided by the company you are working for. Some states however may require you to become certified with the equipment beforehand which will also be provided by your employer.
The question should be what is the difference between a winch and a hoist. In this case they are both powered by compressed air. Both winches and hoists are available which can be powered by air, electricity, hydraulics, or manual power (other means of powering this equipment is also available). A hoist is made for lifting. A winch is made for dragging/pulling. A hoist is designed with a special safety factor, limit switches and redundant braking for overhead lifting. Winches are designed to a completely different criteria. Keep in mind that several companies have manufactured "hybrid" winches which are made to lift. They are basically dual purpose pieces of equipment (hoist/winch).
Hoist is a noun (a hoist) and a verb (to hoist).
