King Henry VIII of England was born on 28th June 1491, the son of King Henry VII and his wife, Elizabeth of York. He became King when his father died on 21st April 1509, and reigned until his death on 28th January 1547. He is probably best known, certainly outside of the UK, for having married six times. The main reason for his multiple marriages was to try and have a son who would be an undisputed male heir to the throne, avoiding the possibility of a civil war after his death; his father had become King by his victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, bringing to an end the long and bloody conflict known as The Wars of the Roses. The ending of his first marriage by divorce was opposed by The Pope in Rome, and this led to Henry establishing The Church of England, with the English monarch as its head. He is also known for the Dissolution of the Monasteries in England, an exercise in confiscation of land and buildings which left many thousands of clerics without their positions. He conducted wars against France and Scotland, and was a claimant to the French Throne. He was the second son of Henry VII, and as such was probably intended for a career in the Church. To this end he was highly educated in Latin, French, Spanish and Music. He became the heir to the English throne when his elder brother, Arthur, died aged 16. Towards the end of his life he became vastly overweight, a result of an accident leaving him with a leg injury which prevented him from exercising. He died at The Palace of Westminster in London on 28th January 1547, aged 55. Rumors that the cause of his death was syphilis only circulated a long time after his death and were probably untrue. Henry VIII (28 June 1491 - 28 January 1547) was King of England and Wales also Lord of Ireland, later King of Ireland, from 21 April 1509 until his death.

Henry VIII succeeded his father Henry VII following the latter's death in April 1509. It was the first untroubled succession in many years. Henry was not properly prepared for his role as king as for the first 10 or so years of his life he was in fact second in line to the throne after his elder brother Arthur. Had Arthur survived the illness that caused his death in 1501 it would have been him and not Henry who would have succeeded. Hope this helps.
