Walt Disney often said that the idea behind Disneyland came to him while he was at the park with his daughters, Diane and Sharon. Sunday was always "Daddy's Day" with his girls and on this one Sunday, he took his girls to the Merry-Go-Round in Griffith Park. He was sitting on the bench, eating peanuts, while watching his girls go around on the Merry-Go-Round and he decided that there had to be a place where parents and children could have fun together.
But this was just the tip of the iceberg. Walt had wanted to create a place that he could call his own for years. Combined with his fascination for trains, Disneyland came about when he pitched the idea to some of his artists, set designers, and other Studio Executives and moved them into a new division called WED Enterprises. This division was later named Walt Disney Imagineering.
Walt once said he took his daughters to a park so they could ride the merry-go-round almost every Saturday. While the girls were having fun he had to sit on a bench and just watch. Then he had the idea to built a place where the whole family could have fun together, and that's how he came up with the idea of Disneyland.
Disneyland resulted because Disney's doctor suggested he find some leisure activity that would help reduce his stress of running a studio. He always loved railroads and he found out one of his animators was also into railroads. This was Ollie Johnston who told Disney he was building a steam engine and showed him what he had done to his backyard railroad. So, Disney began his and ended up with a tunnel, bridges, and other things that had been his flower garden. Ollie writes, "the next thing you know Walt was thinking a putting a railroad at the studio. There was a guy in Los Gatos who had some engines that were used in the 1915 Pan American fair so Walt was thinking about buying these. Then he got to thinking there wasn't enough room here and before long there was Disneyland." In 1952 Disney set up the organization to plan the park, plans an models were made, and 160 acres of Oranges were bought in Anaheim. Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955.
It was not discovered. A man named Walt Disney made the theme park. He also made many Disney movies. He died in 1966.
