Mary I was a staunch Catholic, in contrast to both her sister and her her half-brother, and predecessor on the throne, Edward VI.

Mary was almost rabid in her religious fervor, and indeed had more than 280 religious dissenters, primarily Protestants, burned at the stake over the course of her 5-year long reign, in what has become known as the Marian Persecutions.

In contrast, Elizabeth was very much more tolerant, following a personal motto of 'Video et Taceo', I see and hear nothing. While it can be said that she mostly held to the Protestant faith, indeed, she wouldn't have been permitted to take the throne if she had not, she still had some Catholic touches such as the crucifix, and downplayed sermons, a key Protestant belief. Most of all, she favored pragmatism, in religious beliefs.
