There are many interpretations of the book. During the hippie era, the book was well-known for showing the effects of LSD. They believed, that Carroll himself took drugs to write the book(opium which was very famous in England at that time). Another interpretation is, that the main conflict is about Alice who doesn't want to be an adult, because she is entering the puberty(she's mentioned about 12 or 13 years old in the book) and is a mix between a childish girl and an adult woman. In the wonderland, everyone treats her like an adult, even though she isn't ready yet to become an adult. You can see it clearly at the magic growing of her, she grows or shrunks several time during the book and the film, which is a reference to this conflict. There's also a nihilistic interpretation which says that Carroll just made a funny book for children, to entertain them and to make money with this book, but without a deeper background.
