The mambo originally came from Cuba as the combination of guaracha and the Cuban son. In the US they were referred to as fast rumba and added the Lindy Hop. In the late 1940s several New York orchestras gave their music titles as mambo. The word is of African origin and used frequently in Cuba during the 40s by Cuban musicians. Among them Arseñio Rodriguez, and Arcaño. It was actually Cuban bandleader and composer Damaso Perez Prado who began to call his new compositions mambo in the late 40s while in Mexico City. Prado's. "Que Rico el Mambo" became a hit in 1949 while he was in Panama for the carnivals. A tour was arranged for him to promote the new mambo with a tour of the Mexican states. In the meantime, in New York, Latin Orchestras as they were referred to at the time were arranging and writing Latin dance music and jumped on the bandwagon after "Que Rico el Mambo" ("Mambo Jambo") and "Mambo no 5" were released in the US by RCA. As early as 1947 dancers at the New York Palladium began to innovate dance patterns. It was Arthur Murray the well known dance master with a long string of dance studios who formulated step patterns on their dance chart with his dance directors using demonstrations of the new mambo by Cuban cabaret teams. Mr. Murray held a Press Conference and demonstration in 1950. The mambo was officially launched.
