How do Sherlock Holmes and Watson complement each other's personalities?

Their partnership works well in this mystery because they communicate with each other and play off each other well, as in other stories. They trust each other, and so they can't be corrupted or easily killed to remove them from solving the mystery. Watson is silent when Holmes wants to lay a trap, and many interesting details are revealed because either Watson is writing to Holmes, or asking Holmes to explain something. Mostly, in this story, it is Holmes' mind and Watson's footwork and observations... Holmes does come out to help Watson in the end, but the pairing works well because they both contribute and work as a team, while having different talents and roles.
