The only time Windows Vista automatically closes programs is when it is performing a system restart after an update. You can stop this from happening by turning off automatic updates. Sometimes, a program may stop responding and you can choose to wait for the issue to rectify itself or close the program down manually.

Use control-alternate-delete ( push all three keys at once ) and from that menu choose applications. then highlight the program that is not responding and click end program. You may get another notice that says that the program is not responding and do you want to end it, choose end program.
Try reinstalling the program. There may also be a possibility that the program is trying to save on a bad sector part of the data storage.
