Two of the seven were lost forever or claimed by Sauron, four were destroyed or swallowed by dragons, and the last was given to Thrain (the father of Thorin) by this father Thror before it was taken off him at the fortress of Sauron, the necromancer, Dol Gulder in southern Mirkwood.

The seven rings may have been worn at one time by the seven Dwarf-kings of the Seven Houses: Dwalin, Barin, Bavor, Thelor, Durin, Thrar, and Druin.

The ring had to be destroyed as it was then the root of Sauron's power. As long as it existed, you could physically defeat and even kill Sauron in battle, but he would eventually return for a later generation to have to fight all over again. Unless the root is killed, the brambles grow back.
