what i would do is train your starter (probably fire or water as leaf is a poor choice) until you can find a hoothoot. you need one bird in order to use fly so hoothoot is the best choice early on, they appear at night mainly. and if uyou want a strong defence catch a bellsprout in the tower and trade it with the girl for an onix (violet city, south-west)
