it depends. I've already gotten all 8 badges in johto, beaten the elite four, and gotten all 8 kanto badges, so the 2nd gym was awhile ago. I think you start at the city of the first gym, go south, and just follow that path. If there's a place called union cave, go through there. Once you reach the town, talk to the rocket grunt near the well. Then go in all the houses there and talk to everyone. Then go back to the well. The grunt should be gone, and you can go down the well. Any more trouble you have, it's very useful to go to the forums on gamespot.com
