Yes there are hidden messages in a Series of Unfortuante Events. if you really got into the book you'd be able to tell what the hidden messages are. It's hard to really tell though because Lemony Snicket gives good descriptions of everything so you'd have to really dig deep to find them.

Things like The Series of Unfortunate Events and Charlie Bone are very good books for 9-12 year old kids. The Series of Unfortunate Events has thirteen books, starting easier and getting a little more harder as you read more of them.
