Every scene with his mother is a scene that shows he's not "compleatly evil". You see him as a child who's trying to take care of his sick mother, and who's dealing with that and the dissapearance of his father and taking care of the family finances. He gives Holly half of the fairy gold so she would heal his mother; someone who's evil and only wants money would not do such a tihng.
There are little hints throughout the books, and if your really reading closely, you'll see them and just love Artemis, even in book 1.
Artemis Fowl book 1 is one of my FAVORITE books. and the thing about having Holly heal his mother is right, but in the epilouge it states that he did it not just to get his mother ba
ck but also because social services were looking into his case.
