It is About a Boy (Charlie Bucket) and his family, who are very poor. They live in the same town as the fabulous Chocolate factory of Willy Wonka. Charlie is one of 5 lucky chocolate bar buyers to find a Golden Ticket inside their Wonka bars, which entitles them to a tour of the Factory, which no person has been inside for years.

Charlie is accompanied by his grandpa Joe, and each of 4 other kids is accompanied by a parent (parents in the book). As they tour the factory with Wonka, each of the kids falls prey to dangers there. In the end, Charlie discovers that Willy Wonka, shut off and alone, is seeking an heir.

In the movie, Willy's candy line is becoming odd and unpopular, reflecting his depression over his life in general, and he hopes Charlie can help him with new and better ideas.

In the movie, unlike the book, Willy reconciles with his father Wilbur (a dentist) before agreeing to move Charlie and his family into the factory.
