I would consider his work to be more symbolism in nature as symbolism represents ideas and emotions. Duchamp believed that art can be ideas instead of worldly objects. He also showed humor and the use of distraction in his work, as with his "assisted readymade" sculptures. An example was his bicycle wheel attached to a wooden stool. A pragmatist would never consider art to be an end in itself.
