no it is meant to be on dragonball (so the series before dragonball z) however they changed so much of it when they made it into the movie that i dont think that you can really say that it is. its more like an adaption of dragonball dont try to compare it you'll only be disapointed.

If you mean manga then there is only one manga series called Fullmetal Alchemist and it came out before either anime in August 2001. The newest anime FMA: Brotherhood more closely follows the original manga.

nope just the one series. If you liked the anime you should really read the manga. Its just so much better than the anime and it goes into more details about all of the characters back grounds and even shows a few more family members not in the anime.
