The Maiar are the helpers of the Valar, who serve the creator god Eru Iluvatar.
Notable ones include the five who were sent down to Arda as 'wizards' (Istari), Gandalf the Grey ,Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown , and two Blue Wizards. Also there is Mailon, who was later known as Sauron. Also the balrogs are fallen Maiar who followed Sauron's old master, Melkor/Morgoth.
