Sauron poured his will into it, part of his soul, his malice, his evil, his will to dominate all Middle-Earth. I think the real power of the Ring is its will: it is like Sauron's evil will ten times intensified, so he can never lose. As long as he has it, he is the most powerful being under the sun. (Because he's got this evil thing with an incredibly powerful will to dominate.) When the Ring is still in existence (not destroyed), he cannot be destroyed, as it is a part of him and he is a part of it. (Sort of like the Horcruxes in Harry Potter: I hope you've read Harry Potter?) They are bound. It can only be destroyed in the fires from whence it came.
