if you mean people who are private and peaceful have a lot of courage it mght mean because they don't get in to fights or have their reputation ruined so they have a lot ahead of them with no problems
eg. Paris Hilton compared to Michelle Obama
"It's difficult to believe [Wilkes] and Sergeant Horrible Hanley are in the same army, on the same side too. We have never come across anyone who treats us with such kindness and consideration…so we treat him right too." -
Shows the differences between the two sergeants and the response the soldiers have to both, narrated after the battalion first met their new authority figure/captain Wilkes.
The Sergeant is a very strict and vindictive man who, in my opinion is very brave. People will dismiss him as a 'coward' without even thinking about it simply because he isn't a very nice character. But if you dig a little deeper, like I was made to do when I had to write an essay on him, you find out how he isn't a coward. He isn't very nice, yes, but he isn't a coward. He's strict and teaches his men in a cruel way, but is it really that bad compared to what they're training FOR?
Cowardice is a theme found in Private Peaceful. Cowardice is a theme that is often paired with bravery in this piece of literature.
