In the original fairy tale, Cinderella attends the ball and escapes the Prince three times. On the third night, the Prince is prepared for Cinderella to flee, however, and spreads pitch on the palace steps. When Cinderella runs away, her left shoe gets stuck and she's forced to leave it behind or be caught.
