It depends how you define the term. One should distinguish between the Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs and the various movie ( many actors involved aside from Weissmuller) and television adaptations. There was an episode in the Television series Tarzan ( Ron Ely as the ape man here) That featured the Soul group The Supremes as missionary nuns! Surely this was step in the right direction. The very idea of a White man dominant ( as Tarzan surely was) in Darkest Africa might be offensive to some, but positive Black characters were interwoven into the fabrid as well.
