Violet, Klaus and Sunny are sent to live with a distant relative Montgomery Montgomery (Uncle Monty). He is the perfect guardian and very kind to the children, he also works with reptiles - mainly snakes - and is about to embark on a trip to Peru which he plans to take the children on. However, his assistant disappeared and is being replaced by Stephano a.k.a Count Olaf.
Uncle Monty believes Stephano is a spy despite the children attempts to tell him that it is Count Olaf. Stephano then poisons Uncle Monty and attempts to kidnap the children by taking them on the planned trip to Peru.
A member of his theatre troupe pretends to be a doctor so they can get away with the plan but Violet has to break into Olaf's case to find proof that not only did Olaf murder Uncle Monty but he is Olaf.
