I believe it was a methodology to determine if a crime had been committed, and way to not automatically jump to that conclusion. But I could have this completely wrong:
Example - you come home, and the vase of flowers is knocked over, and there's a puddle of water on the floor.
1) Can the facts be explained by natural law? If the window was open, it's possible the wind knocked the vase over. Or an earthquake could have occured. If natural law runs contrary to the facts (i.e. the window was closed and there were no earthquakes), go to 2.
2) Can the facts be explained by chance? Some things just happen sometimes, but it's rather unlikely that the vase randomly decided to fall over, so go to 3.
3) Can the facts be explained by design? That is, did someone plan and execute a crime here? Was there a motive, and an action? Prehaps our naughty Simaese cat has knocked the vase over to get at the fresh water inside? Clever plan, and an inspection of the wood floor shows the tell-tale wet pawprints. Elementary, my dear Ruckus!

When approaching an analytical essay on Sherlock Holmes, I start by identifying a specific theme or aspect of the stories, such as the role of observation and deduction, the nature of justice, or the character dynamics between Holmes and Watson. I then gather textual evidence from Arthur Conan Doyle's works to support my analysis, ensuring to include quotes and examples that illustrate my points. Structuring the essay with a clear introduction, body paragraphs that explore different facets of the theme, and a cohesive conclusion helps to present a compelling argument. Finally, I would consider the historical context and impact of Holmes on the detective genre to provide a deeper understanding of the character's significance.
This is one of my favourite quotes from the books, and it is in 'The Naval Treaty': __"You come at a crisis, Watson," said he[Holmes]. "If this paper remains blue, all is well. If it turns red, it means a man's life." He dipped it into the test-tube, and it flushed at once into a dull, dirty crimson.
To answer your question, the date generally accepted by scholars as the date that Holmes supposedly plunged into the Reichenbach Falls is: Monday, 4th May 1891. His death of old age or some other cause later in his life is not recorded. ------ Sherlock Holmes was not a real person but a character created by writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This fiction hero "died" in the story "The Adventure of the Final Problem" published in 1893 in The Strand Magazine and then in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" People were so concerned that Conan Doyle had to bring the great detective back. In 1901 Sherlock Holmes reappeared in "The Hound of the Baskervilles". The story supposedly happened before Holmes' "death" at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Holmes returned officially from the dead in the 1903 story "The Empty House", which is the first story in the book "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories until 1927 though the chronology of Holmes' adventures ends with "His Last Bow", at the beginning of World War I in 1914. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died in 1930.
In "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," Dr. Watson is portrayed as a loyal and observant companion to Sherlock Holmes. He describes himself as being "the one person in the world who can always be counted upon to support him" and often acts as the narrative voice, highlighting Holmes's brilliance. Watson's admiration for Holmes is evident when he states, "I had never known him to be so moved." His dedication and respect for Holmes' investigative prowess shine through in their partnership.
