Snape wasn't really a death eater. He pretended to be one but he was a member of the Order.

Snape WAS a Death Eater, but he became a double agent for the Order of the Phoenix when he came to Dumbledore to beg him to protect Lilly.

Severus Snape joined the Death Eaters after leaving Hogwarts.

Once he discovered Voldemort was going to kill the only woman he ever loved, Lily Evans, he went to Dumbledore and in return for their protection joined the Order of the Phoenix.

Snape told Voldemort he was a Death Eater spying on the Order. In reality, he was an Order member spying on the Death Eaters and only telling Voldemort selective information.
