Leonardo was born out of wedlock, but was raised by his father and stepmother so he was taken care of but wasn't necessarily poor or rich. At age five he moved to live with his uncle and grandparents. He got little formal education beyond basic reading, writing and math, but his artistic talents were obvious from an early age. About age 14 he was given an apprenticeship with Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. In his apprenticeship he learned techniques and technical skills as well as metalwork, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting, and sculpting. At the age of 20 he qualified for guild membership and established his own workshop. One of the main problems he had all of his life was finishing work and he would take commissions but not finish them. He was sued several times for not completing a commission he was all ready paid for, so he was poor as an adult. He died at the French court with the king acting as his sponsor.
